The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of `recipes` way back into ancient history, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. In practice though, mostly, these ancient cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful. Moving on, there were a couple of cookery books published in the 1300s ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these have no connection with the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich people of the period. During the next few hundred years, the upper classes competed to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down the recipes of their peers. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
