The History of Recipes

We are able to follow the history of written recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. However, generally, these early records were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find two recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are unconnected to the spicy food that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of food served to the nobility of that period.

Over the following few centuries, the powerful and rich houses competed to offer the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

When we get to the 1900s, cook books are in great demand, mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth.
