The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, generally, these ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. He recounts how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he describes how the chefs of Roman times made use of many different spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like thyme, mint and dill. Over the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Pixies recipe.
