The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, these, ancient records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the Roman chefs used many aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, rue and dill. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the East, including basil and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas was responsible for a torrent in cookery books, many of which still exist in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
