The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed back into history, in truth as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. However, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Closer to modern times, there are a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s ; a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these have no connection with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the tables of the nobility of the time. During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, trying out, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe publications are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, more spare time and a general increase in wealth. |
