The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes far back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also informs us how the early Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs, including a few you will know like bay, rue and dill. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the holy land, such as basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created an eruption in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are now in academic collections. By the advent of the 1900s, cook books were in great demand, mostly due to better eduction, more free time and a general increase in wealth. |
