The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existance of recipes back into history, in fact as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Closer to modern times, there are two interesting recipe books published in the 1300s : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food enjoyed by the rich and wealthy people of the period. During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes of the day. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications are starting to become popular as a result of better eduction, more free time and having more money. |
