The History of Recipes

Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be observed far back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient records were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful.

As we move on, there were two interesting recipe books which appeared in the 1300s : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books have no connection with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich.

During the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West tried to offer the most exotic meals, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group.

The revolution that is television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site.
