The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked back into the distant past, certainly as far as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, in the main part, these early recipes were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient Romans made use of many spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused an explosion in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Sweetheart Cakes For Two recipe.
