The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed far back into distant history, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef describes how the early Romans were skilled in the use of many different spices, including some familiar names like basil, rue and parsley. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from Arab countries, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an eruption in recipe publications, some of which are now in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
