The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existence of recipes far back into antiquity, in fact as far back as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also describes how the Romans used a wide range of spices, including many that are still in use today like thyme, rue and parsley. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created an explosion in recipe publications, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
