The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs and spices, including some familiar names such as bay, rue and dill. During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of Europe competed to lay on the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
