The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient recipes were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also describes how the cooks of Roman times used many spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise like thyme, fennel and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new spices and herbs led to an increase in publications on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking books were in high demand, as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. The revolution that is television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
