The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be traced way back into distant history, at least as far as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Later, there were a couple of books which were published in the 1300s - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books have no connection with the curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations led to an outbreak in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections. The arrival of television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
