The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes back into ancient history, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful. Closer to modern times, we have two interesting recipe books which date from the 1300s - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the time. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most exotic banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the arrival of the 1900s, cooking publications were starting to become popular mostly due to better eduction, increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
