The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be found way back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are some tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were a couple of recipe books dating from the fourteenth century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are not about the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared for the wealthy. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. When we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are highly popular due to better eduction, people having increased spare time and having more money. |
