The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed back into history, certainly as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, mostly, these old recipes were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he recounts how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, rue and parsley. During the next few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The revolution that is television brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
