The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of meal recipes far back into the distant past, at least as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. Later on, we find a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food cooked for the rich and powerful of that time. For the centuries that followed, the powerful and rich tried to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased spare time and disposable income. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
