The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed way back into the far past, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef describes how the Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including some familiar names such as thyme, mint and dill. During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe tried to serve up the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, trying out, and writing down popular recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 1900s, cooking books are starting to become popular due to higher levels of literacy, more free time and having more money. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
