The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existence of recipes back into history, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are some tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also informs us how the chefs of Roman times made use of many different herbs, including a few you will know such as basil, mint and parsley. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the East, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices caused a surge in recipe manuscripts, most of which are now in private collections. By the arrival of the 20th century, recipe books are highly popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased free time and having more money. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
