The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existance of recipes far back into antiquity, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these early recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to academics is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful. Later on, there are two interesting books published in the fourteenth century - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are not about the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals served to the rich. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from the East, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices caused an increase in books on cooking, many of which still exist in private collections. For the next few years, the powerful families of the West competed with each other to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of the TV brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
