The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far back as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, these, early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also describes how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavors, including some familiar names for example thyme, rue and parsley. During the following few centuries, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. The revolution that is television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
