The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be traced way back into antiquity, in truth as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cookbooks were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were two interesting recipe books published in the 14th Century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals served to the rich and powerful of those days. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from Arab countries, such as basil and coriander. These new spices and herbs led to an increase in manuscripts on food, most of which still exist in academic collections. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Choux Glorieux (Glorious Cabbage) recipe.
