The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as a concept can be traced back into history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, mostly, these old recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were divided into starters, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs, including many that are still in use today like basil, rue and parsley.

In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as basil and coriander. These new herbs and spices led to an increase in recipe publications, many of which are kept safe in academic collections.

The arrival of TV brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading.
