The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far back as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, mostly, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, there are two books dating from the fourteenth century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals served to the rich people of the period. For the next few years, the powerful families of the West tried to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, trying out, and writing down popular recipes of the day. By the advent of the twentieth century, recipe books are starting to become popular due to increased literacy, people having increased spare time and disposable income. |
