The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed far back into the far past, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, in the main part, these early recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated. Closer to modern times, we find a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the 14th Century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are not about the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the upper classes of the time. During the next few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy houses tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and because of this cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cook books are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more free time and having more money. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Christmas Cinnamon Ornaments recipe.
