Christmas Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup melted butter
2 eggs beaten
1 tsp vanila
2 cup sifted flour
1 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt

Directions

Blend sugar and shortening welll. Stir in beaten eggs and vanila.
Sift and mix dry ingredients and add to butter mixture, blending
well. Chill. Turn on to lightly blouredboard and roll to 1/8 inch
thickness. Cut with floured cutters.

Before baking, I sprinkle colored sugar on to the cookies. It sticks
and then there's no need for frosting, unless you would rather have
it.

On greased cookie sheets, bake in dg.375 oven for 10 to 12 minutes.

The History of Recipes

It is actually possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, generally, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are a few tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated.

As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef describes how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavors, including some familiar names for example bay, rue and parsley.

During the following few centuries, the rich families of the West competed with each other to offer the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day.

The revolution that is television brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this.
