The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes way back into distant history, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are some stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also describes how the early Romans used a good variety of spices, including a few you will know for example basil, mint and dill. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an eruption in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are now in private libraries. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Christmas Fudge recipe.
