The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked back into the distant past, certainly as far back as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, these, ancient recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are a couple of interesting recipe books which appeared in the 1300s : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are not about the indian curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals cooked for the rich people of the time. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from the holy land, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused an increase in books on cooking, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. The arrival of TV brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
We hope you enjoy this Christmas Party Pinwheels recipe.
