The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes back into history, in truth as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, these, early records were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful. Later on, there are a couple of interesting cookery books which were published in the fourteenth century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are not about the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of that time. For the next few years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chunky Chicken Chili recipe.
