The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found far back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, generally, these early records were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius created a few scripts describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main meal and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef recounts how the chefs of Roman times used a good variety of herbs, including many that are still in use today for example bay, mint and dill. Over the succeeding few centuries, the families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers. When we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were in high demand, due to better eduction, more spare time and having more money. The arrival of TV gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
