The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes far back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old cookbooks were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Moving on, we find some books which date from the fourteenth century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich and wealthy people of the time. During the following few centuries, the powerful and wealthy strove to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day. By the advent of the 1900s, cook books were greatly in demand mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money. |
