The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be traced way back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, sadly, these early cookbooks were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were two recipe books which date from the 14th Century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of meals served to the rich people of the time. Over the following few centuries, the upper-class families of the West competed to serve up the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of TV brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Cinnamon Rolls (Bechtel) recipe.
