The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into distant history, in truth as far into history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cook books were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.

In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated.

Later on, we have two interesting recipe books dating from the fourteenth century - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they have no connection with the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the upper classes of that time.

For the centuries that followed, the wealthy families of Europe tried to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the advent of the twentieth century, recipe books were increasing in popularity due to increased literacy, people having increased spare time and being a little richer.

The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site.
