The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` way back into antiquity, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move on, there were a couple of interesting cookery books which date from the 1300s : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are nothing to do with the indian food that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared for the rich people of those days. During the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to serve the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it was during the 1800s that haute cuisine and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The revolution that is television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
