The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existance of recipes back into the far past, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated. During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius created a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he informs us how the Romans used many different aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like bay, fennel and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created a surge in recipe books, most of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
