The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. Additionally, he informs us how the chefs of Roman times used a wide range of spices, including some familiar names for example basil, rue and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused an outbreak in books on cooking, most of which still exist in academic collections. By the time we get to the 1900s, recipe books are in great demand, due to increased literacy, people having more free time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
