The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Later, we have a couple of cookery books dating from the fourteenth century ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are unconnected to the curry that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals served to the rich people of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new tastes created an eruption in manuscripts on food, most of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of television brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
