The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also tells us how the ancient chefs used many different herbs, including some that we all recognise such as bay, mint and dill. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new spices and herbs caused a surge in recipe manuscripts, most of which are now in academic collections. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
