The History of Recipes

It is possible to track the history of meal recipes way back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. However, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `blissful`.

Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius informs us how the cooks of Roman times made use of a wide range of herbs, including some that we all recognise such as basil, mint and parsley.

Later, we have some recipe books published in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are not about the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the time.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices like parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices caused an increase in recipe manuscripts, most of which are now in private cookery archives.

The arrival of television brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading.
