The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes back into antiquity, in fact as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also recounts how the Roman chefs used many spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise such as basil, rue and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to a surge in recipe publications, some of which still exist in academic collections. The revolution that is television gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
