The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into the distant past, certainly as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, generally, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find a couple of interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich and wealthy people of those days. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created a torrent in manuscripts on food, many of which are now in private collections. The introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
