The History of Recipes

Recipes as a concept can be observed way back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, sadly, these early recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Later on, there are a couple of cookery books from the 1300s - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are not about the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals served to the rich people of that time.

For the next few years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to lay on the best banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time.

By the advent of the twentieth century, recipe publications were highly popular due to increased literacy, increased leisure time and having more disposable income.

The introduction of the TV brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site.
