The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of written recipes way back into distant history, in truth as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he recounts how the Roman chefs used a good variety of herbs, including some familiar names like thyme, fennel and dill. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new tastes led to an explosion in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
