The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these old recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are some tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated. As we move on, there are a couple of interesting recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are unconnected to the indian food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menues of the upper classes of those days. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an eruption in publications on food, most of which are kept safe in private libraries. During the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of the West competed with each other to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording the recipes of their peers. The revolution that is television brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
