The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes far back into the distant past, at least as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old records were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also tells us how the ancient chefs used a wide range of spices, including a few you will know like basil, rue and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as basil and coriander. These new spices and herbs prompted an explosion in publications on food, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
