Ingredients

1 lb frozen pound cake, thaw
2 pt coffee ice cream, soft
1 1/3 cup hot fudge topping
3 heath bars, crushed
1 cup heavy cream, whipped
Directions
Cut cake into 1/3" slices and halve each slice diagonally. You will
have triangular pieces of cake. Line bottom of 9" springform pan with
cake, filling in any spaces by cutting some slices into small pieces.
Spread half the ice cream over cake. Freeze until firm, about 1 hour.
Spread half the fudge topping over ice cream and sprinkle with half
the crushed Heath bars. Repeat layering with remaining cake, ice
cream, fudge topping and candy. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and
freeze until ice cream is set. Before serving, remove pan sides.
Place cake on platter. Spread some whipped cream on sides of cake.
Pipe rosettes of cream around edge of cake. Serves 8-10.

The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, mostly, these early cookbooks were just primitive pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are some clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful. Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the early Romans made use of many aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as thyme, fennel and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the East, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new herbs and spices led to an explosion in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in private collections. During the next few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses strove to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a result cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that cookery and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the advent of the 1900s, cook books were greatly in demand mostly as a result of increased literacy, more free time and disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
