The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be found back into distant history, certainly as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, mostly, these old cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some documents detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also informs us how the cooks of Roman times made use of a wide range of spices, including a few you will know for example bay, mint and parsley. Over the following few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe competed to lay on the most extravagent meals, and because of this cooks and their recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The arrival of TV brought us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
