The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be traced far back into the far past, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. However, these, ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. He tells us how the roman meals were divided into starters, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the ancient chefs made use of many different herbs and spices, including a few you will know such as basil, rue and asafoetida. During the next few hundred years, the powerful and rich competed to serve up the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookbooks are in great demand, mostly due to better eduction, people having increased leisure time and having more disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
