The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed back into distant history, at least as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old recipes were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are not about the curry that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food eaten by the upper classes. Over the next few centuries, the powerful and wealthy tried to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Cold Peach Strawberry Soup recipe.
