The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also describes how the cooks of Roman times made use of many different herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, rue and parsley. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from the holy lands, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to an explosion in recipe publications, the majority of which are now in academic collections. The introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
