The History of Recipes

It is possible to track the history of meal recipes way back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful.

Later, there were a couple of interesting books which were published in the fourteenth century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are not about the indian food that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the rich people of the period.

For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are in great demand, as a result of increased literacy, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth.

The arrival of television brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our site.
