The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `wonderful`. Later, there were a couple of books which date from the 1300s ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals served to the rich and wealthy people of that period. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an outbreak in manuscripts on food, most of which are kept safe in private libraries. For the decades that followed, the upper classes strove to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books are starting to become popular mostly due to increased literacy, more spare time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
